Citrus x sinensis 'Moro' (Blood Orange, Raspberry Orange)

Produces medium-sized fruit with blood-coloured flesh when days are hot & nights are cold. The blood orange is a variety of orange with crimson, almost blood-coloured or violet flesh. Fruits from late winter (July/August) and the colour deepens as the season progresses. 'Moro' is juicy and has a slight berry flavour to it. Maximum height at maturity is 2-2.5m.

The distinctive dark flesh colour is due to the presence of anthocyanins, a family of polyphenol pigments common to many flowers and fruit, but uncommon in citrus fruits. Chrysanthemin is the main compound found in red oranges. Cultivars include 'Moro', 'Tarocco' and 'Sanguinello'.
