Morus nigra (Black Mulberry)
MORACEAE
Morus nigra, called Black Mulberry is a species of flowering plant in the family Moraceae that is native to southwestern Asia, where it has been cultivated for so long that its precise natural range is unknown. Black Mulberry has sweet, intense, blackish red fruit about 2cm long which mature in late spring to early summer. The fruits are quite juicy with excellent flavour. The leaves are heart shaped, glossy green forming a well shaped ornamental tree. Very easy to grow in a sunny position, requiring very little care. Deciduous in New Zealand. Prune annually to maintain shape.
CAUTION: All parts of the plant besides the ripe fruit contain a toxic milky sap. Eating too many berries may have a laxative effect. Additionally, unripe green fruit may cause nausea, cramps, and a hallucinogenic effect.
