Calycanthus floridus (Eastern Sweetshrub)

Calycanthus floridus (Carolina Allspice) is a native North American species, while Calycanthus x raulstonii (such as the famous cultivar 'Hartlage Wine') is an interspecific hybrid crossed between C. floridus and the Chinese sweetshrub (C. chinensis). The habit is a mounded suckering shrub. The leaves are 5-10cm long and 5cm wide. The flowers are smaller, brownish-red or maroon flowers about 3.5-5cm across.
