Notelaea cunninghamii, commonly known as black maire, is a native tree of New Zealand, belonging to the olive family Oleaceae. Previously known as Nestegis cunninghamii. Black Maire is now found only in small areas of the North Island forest because of its high value as a hard timber and for firewood. The tree has long, leathery leaves that have a recessed mid-rib. The tree has a straight trunk clothed in coarse, rough, cork-like bark, that provides year-round textural interest. Produces red or yellow fruits. H 6-20m x W 4-8m
