Piper excelsum ssp. psittacorum (Kawakawa)

Piper excelsum (formerly known as Macropiper excelsum) of the pepper family (Piperaceae) and commonly known as Kawakawa (sometimes Māori Kava), is a small tree or shrub of which the subspecies P. excelsum subsp. excelsum is endemic to New Zealand and the subspecies P. excelsum subsp. psittacorum is found on Lord Howe Island, Norfolk Island and the Kermadec Islands.

This subspecies has larger leaves with markedly wavy margins. The leaves are also significantly shinier. The flower spikes are also significantly longer.
