A large, sweet black grape, it is said to have arrived in New Zealand around 1838 with Bishop Jean Baptiste François Pompallier and was planted in the early orchard plantings in Northland. Given its origins, there is little doubt it was used to produce communion wine at the time, and it now enjoys modern-day status as a Wavoursome dessert variety. The large black grapes are sweet with full flavour, excellent as dessert grapes. Disease resistant and they ripen in March.
