Casimiroa edulis commonly known as the white sapote, casimiroa, Mexican apple, cochitzapotl in the Nahuatl language is a species of tropical fruiting tree in the family Rutaceae (citrus family), native to eastern Mexico and Central America south to Costa Rica.
Casimiroa 'Te Puna' is a selected hybrid, producing fruit with a flavour which is richly sweet and musky, resembling a combination of peach, banana and pear with a smooth texture. Pick the fruit while firm and changing colour from green to yellow. If picked too early, the fruit will taste astringent and unpleasant. Fruit should be picked with a gentle twist. Once harvested, the fruit will ripen quickly, cool storage will allow them to be kept for up to 2 weeks. Produces delicious orange-sized fruit from May to August.
Summer pruning might be required when there is lots of whippy growth, and trimming will encourage more branching, which will mature and bear fruit. By pruning the tree, you can control its height and spread.
Large-sized plants (15L and above and over 1.5m tall) can only be delivered to Palmerston North addresses.
