Ensete ventricosum, commonly known as enset or ensete, Ethiopian banana, Abyssinian banana, pseudo-banana, false banana and wild banana, is an herbaceous species of flowering plant in the banana family Musaceae. The domesticated form of the plant is cultivated only in Ethiopia, where it provides the staple food for approximately 20 million people. The plant is usually found in high-rainfall forests on mountains, and along forested ravines and streams.

Ensete ventricosum 'Maurelli', is a burgundy coloured variety, often referred to as Ethiopian Black Banana or Red Abyssinian Banana. This is a tender, evergreen perennial with huge, upright leaves 3m or more in length. The plant have dark red stalks, and are tinged red on the upper surface, especially around the edges. Flowers are rarely produced in cultivation.
