Podophyllum difforme 'Kaleidoscope' (Chinese Mayapple)
Podophyllum difforme 'Kaleidoscope' (Chinese Mayapple)
BERBERIDACEAE
Podophyllum difforme is native to S. China to N. Vietnam. It is a perennial or rhizomatous geophyte and grows primarily in the temperate biome.
This plant is deciduous, emerging in September with enormous leaves and burgundy flowers which then produce a rounded seed pod hence the name. Podophyllum difforme 'Kaleidoscope' will prefer moist, humus rich soil and should be protected from late frosts in colder regions of New Zealand. Rare and unusual plant.
This is a very fine selection with octagonal leaves and a strong pattern of markings in silver & bronze. Leaves up to 45cm wide and 7-20 burgundy red flowers under the leaves (on 3-5 year old plants).
The amount of pattern varies with light, temperature and age. Avoid burying crowns too deeply, as it can cause rot. Grow in cool house for best color and growth.
WARNING: All parts of this plant are highly toxic if eaten. Wear gloves when handling the plant and wash hands afterwards. The ripe fruits are edible but the seeds are toxic.
